{"id":91,"date":"2008-03-25T22:27:46","date_gmt":"2008-03-26T04:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/25\/fish-and-chips\/"},"modified":"2008-03-25T22:27:46","modified_gmt":"2008-03-26T04:27:46","slug":"fish-and-chips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/25\/fish-and-chips\/","title":{"rendered":"Fish and Chips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Picky Apple doesn&#8217;t eat fish.\u00c2\u00a0 However, last year while on vacation in Kauai, Hawaii (where its all fish, all the time), when he was faced with the option of having a hamburger or chicken sandwich for the 100th time in a row, he manned up and tried some fish&#8230;.and liked it.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, he didn&#8217;t <em>hate <\/em>it at least.\u00c2\u00a0 Fish probably wouldn&#8217;t be his first choice, but he seems willing enough to eat it now.\u00c2\u00a0 (But not shrimp, unfortunately&#8230;.guess I&#8217;ll take what I can get).\u00c2\u00a0 Since I&#8217;ve endured 4 years of a fish-less marriage, I decided it was time that we have fish for dinner occasionally.\u00c2\u00a0 Tonight I attempted fish and chips for the first time, using a recipe from Jamie Oliver.\u00c2\u00a0 I used fresh haddock, and Shiner Bock for the beer batter.\u00c2\u00a0 It was delicious, and honestly, I was surprised with how great it turned out.\u00c2\u00a0 My only complaint was the smell of frying that permeated the entire house and our clothing.\u00c2\u00a0 The Picky Apple said it smelled like Long John Silver&#8217;s in our house, but he liked the fish (and chips!) and helped himself to more.<\/p>\n<p>Our camera is on life support.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re waiting for the release of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usa.canon.com\/consumer\/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&amp;fcategoryid=139&amp;modelid=16303\">Canon EOS Rebel XSi<\/a> in mid-April to replace it, and I hate to go without, so apologies for the next few weeks of bad photos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/fish-and-chips.jpg\" title=\"fish-and-chips.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/fish-and-chips.jpg\" alt=\"fish-and-chips.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Fish and Chips<\/h4>\n<p>Recipe from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/food\/recipes\/recipe\/0,,FOOD_9936_19344,00.html\">Jamie Oliver via The Food Network<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bodytext\">For the chips:<br \/>\n3 3\/4 pints (2 liters) vegetable oil<br \/>\n2 pounds (950 grams) floury potatoes, like russets,  peeled and cut into large chips<br \/>\nFor the batter:<br \/>\n1 cup plain flour<br \/>\n1 cup beer<br \/>\n2 egg whites, whipped to soft peaks<br \/>\nSalt<br \/>\n4 (9 ounce\/250 gram) fillets haddock or cod, skin on, and pin boned<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bodytext\">Pour all the vegetable oil into a deep pan or deep fat fryer, and heat to 300 degrees F (160 degrees C.) Blanch the cut potatoes in the oil until soft, but not colored, about 4 minutes. Remove and drain.<br \/>\nMix together the flour and the beer, then fold in the egg whites. Turn up the heat of the oil to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
