{"id":7349,"date":"2011-12-24T06:35:14","date_gmt":"2011-12-24T12:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/?p=7349"},"modified":"2011-12-24T06:35:14","modified_gmt":"2011-12-24T12:35:14","slug":"salt-dough-ornaments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/24\/salt-dough-ornaments\/","title":{"rendered":"Salt Dough Ornaments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Making salt dough ornaments has been on my list of things to try for several years now, and this year, we finally made them. \u00c2\u00a0They were super duper easy to make (only 3 ingredients!), and The Littlest Apple and I both had lots of fun painting them once they were dry. \u00c2\u00a0We used washable tempera paints, but I&#8217;m sure acrylic would also work well. \u00c2\u00a0You can play around with stamps and pressing patterns into the dough before baking (we did a few of those, like the red star that you can just barely see in the very top right of the photo below). \u00c2\u00a0Next year we might break out the glitter too!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Salt-Dough-Ornaments.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7352\" title=\"Salt Dough Ornaments\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Salt-Dough-Ornaments.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Salt-Dough-Ornaments.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Salt-Dough-Ornaments-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One special thing we did this year was the Family Thumbprint Christmas Tree Ornament (you can see 2 pictured above). \u00c2\u00a0I wanted a way to document our last year as a family of 3, and I thought <a href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/pin\/242561129899961078\/\">this<\/a> would be a cute way to do it. \u00c2\u00a0We pressed our thumbprints into the dough before baking, and then I colored them each a different color and added some details and our name with a black fine-tip Sharpie. \u00c2\u00a0Next year, we&#8217;re going to need a bigger tree ornament to fit all 4 of our thumbprints! \u00c2\u00a0This was actually the only salt dough ornament that went on the tree.<\/p>\n<p>The rest were used for gift tags! \u00c2\u00a0Part necessity because we ran out of gift tags, part &#8220;okay, what do we do with all of the ornaments now that we made them?&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0Aside from their slightly delicate nature (I did accidentally break one when I stacked a few presents on top of each other), I LOVE the way the salt dough ornaments look as gift tags. \u00c2\u00a0I wrote on them with a fine tip sharpie.<\/p>\n<p>One batch of dough made plenty for us!<\/p>\n<h3>Salt Dough Ornaments<\/h3>\n<p>recipe from <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/salt-dough-ornaments\/\">The Happy Housewife<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ingredients:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"zlrecipe-ingredients-list\">\n<li id=\"zlrecipe-ingredient-0\">2 cups flour<\/li>\n<li id=\"zlrecipe-ingredient-1\">1 cup salt<\/li>\n<li id=\"zlrecipe-ingredient-2\">1 cup warm water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mix together flour and salt. \u00c2\u00a0Then mix in the warm water. \u00c2\u00a0Mix until you have a dough that is similar in consistency to pie crust. \u00c2\u00a0Take the dough and place it on a floured surface. \u00c2\u00a0Roll out the dough until it is about 1\/4 inch thick. \u00c2\u00a0Use cookie cutters\u00c2\u00a0to cut out shapes. If you don&#8217;t have cookie cutters you could use a glass to cut circles. \u00c2\u00a0Put the shapes on a cookie sheet. \u00c2\u00a0Then take a sharp object (I used a meat thermometer) to put a small hole in each shape where you will insert the ribbon.
