{"id":5454,"date":"2011-01-19T20:50:59","date_gmt":"2011-01-20T02:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/?p=5454"},"modified":"2011-01-19T20:50:59","modified_gmt":"2011-01-20T02:50:59","slug":"squirrel-craft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/19\/squirrel-craft\/","title":{"rendered":"Squirrel Craft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m going to make this quick so I can go to bed early tonight!<\/p>\n<p>This is a cute little squirrel craft that The Littlest Apple and I did together yesterday as part of the Titmouse Club with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.houstonaudubon.org\/default.aspx\/MenuItemID\/162\/MenuGroup\/Docents.htm\">Houston Audobon Society<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 (A HUGE thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/txtanya.blogspot.com\/\">Tanya<\/a> for recommending this weekly nature program to me after my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/15\/theres-no-such-thing-as-bad-weather\/#comments\">Arboretum<\/a> post!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Squirrel-Craft.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5455\" title=\"Squirrel Craft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Squirrel-Craft.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Squirrel-Craft.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Squirrel-Craft-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, the idea was obviously not mine, but I thought this was such a cute craft!\u00c2\u00a0 We covered the squirrel cutout in glue (painted on with a sponge brush), then sprinkled coffee grounds on the squirrel body.\u00c2\u00a0 The tail is made of shredded wheat (which The Littlest Apple was too impatient to crumble up).\u00c2\u00a0 Then we added a googly eye and a pom pom nose, and that&#8217;s it!\u00c2\u00a0 The Littlest Apple really enjoyed the sensory experience of the coffee grounds and the crumbly shredded wheat.<\/p>\n<p>The Littlest Apple (and I) learned so much about squirrels with the nice docents from the Houston Audobon Society.\u00c2\u00a0 We learned that squirrels are rodents, just like mice and beavers, and that they have to chew on stuff to keep their teeth from growing too long.\u00c2\u00a0 We also learned about several different varieties of squirrels (including the flying squirrel) and that squirrels go down trees head first using their sharp claws to grip the trees.\u00c2\u00a0 We sang several squirrel songs, saw a squirrel skull, used a magnifying glass to look at various nuts that squirrels eat.\u00c2\u00a0 And then after we completed the craft, we went on a nature hike to look for squirrels and their nests.\u00c2\u00a0 It was such a neat class, and I&#8217;m looking forward to returning again next week.<\/p>\n<div class=\"linkwithin_hook\" id=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/19\/squirrel-craft\/\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m going to make this quick so I can go to bed early tonight!
