{"id":4203,"date":"2010-09-17T18:17:33","date_gmt":"2010-09-18T00:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/?p=4203"},"modified":"2010-09-25T07:19:59","modified_gmt":"2010-09-25T13:19:59","slug":"halloween-ribbon-wreath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/17\/halloween-ribbon-wreath\/","title":{"rendered":"Halloween Ribbon Wreath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is my favorite craft to date.\u00c2\u00a0 And yes, I think I said that about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/02\/my-flag-wreath-was-featured-on\/\">the last wreath I made<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 But I had SO MUCH fun working on this wreath (well, except for the spray adhesive on my hand&#8230;more on that momentarily).\u00c2\u00a0 This was tedious and time consuming, but what a labor of love!\u00c2\u00a0 I enjoyed every single second of this project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4205\" title=\"Halloween Ribbon Wreath 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-2.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t normally decorate for Halloween.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/22\/my-house-was-made-for-fall-decorations\/\"><em>Fall<\/em> decorations<\/a>-my pumpkins and apples and leaves-but I&#8217;m just not into Halloween.\u00c2\u00a0 Unlike most of our neighbors, who go ALL OUT for Halloween (with realistic things hanging in the trees, inflatables, tombstones, and a haunted house for the trick-or-treaters), I don&#8217;t like all the scary, creepy, ghoulish decorating, and I don&#8217;t really like dressing up either.\u00c2\u00a0 But when I saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/happy-halloween-wreath-tutorial.html\">Happy Halloween Wreath<\/a> that Jen from <a href=\"http:\/\/tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com\/\">Tatertots and Jello<\/a> (my craft-making hero!) made, I decided that maybe there <em>was<\/em> a way to decorate for Halloween in a happy, cute, fun way after all!\u00c2\u00a0 I owe Jen a million thanks for her amazing wreath idea and great photo tutorial.\u00c2\u00a0 I never would have thought of this on my own!\u00c2\u00a0 So this is my spin on a Happy Halloween Wreath.<\/p>\n<p>I started by wrapping a 12&#8243; foam wreath in wide ribbon (I used black), pinning it at first, and gluing it down as I went.\u00c2\u00a0 Do you really need to see what this step looks like?\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, here you go&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4204\" title=\"Halloween Ribbon Wreath 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-1.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, let the ribbon cutting begin!\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;re going to need lots and LOTS and LOTS of ribbon.\u00c2\u00a0 I ran out of ribbon twice and had to go back for more.\u00c2\u00a0 HOW much should you buy?\u00c2\u00a0 Well, it depends.\u00c2\u00a0 (I know&#8230;so helpful!).\u00c2\u00a0 It depends on how thick you bunch the ribbons together, and it depends on whether or not you plan to completely cover the inside and outside of the wreath (instead of just the front).\u00c2\u00a0 I completely covered the outside of my wreath, so I needed a small truckload of ribbon.\u00c2\u00a0 I used <em>at least<\/em> 138 feet of ribbon.\u00c2\u00a0 Then I lost track.\u00c2\u00a0 Here are my ribbon tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stick to a fairly tight color scheme.\u00c2\u00a0 mine was black, orange, purple lime green, and white<\/li>\n<li>use varying widths of ribbon.\u00c2\u00a0 I wish I had used more wide ribbon.<\/li>\n<li>Select 10-15 different ribbons.\u00c2\u00a0 I used 12, partly because when I ran out the first time, I could no longer locate the ribbons I picked the first time.\u00c2\u00a0 I had to mix in new patterns (and yes, my non-flexible self had to do some deep breathing when I first realized this).\u00c2\u00a0 But I LOVE the interest my 12 different ribbons add.<\/li>\n<li>avoid sheer ribbon unless you <em>enjoy<\/em> getting hot glue all over your fingers.\u00c2\u00a0 Lesson learned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is my ribbon &#8220;line-up,&#8221; minus one. This was definitely a handy piece of paper to have when I had to run back to buy more ribbon.\u00c2\u00a0 I was clearly drawn to polka dots.\u00c2\u00a0 Guess what?\u00c2\u00a0 Polka dots make me happy.\u00c2\u00a0 So does that harlequin pattern.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4206\" title=\"Halloween Ribbon Wreath 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cut the ribbon into 4.5 inch strips.\u00c2\u00a0 I measured one every few minutes to use as a guide strip, but for the most part, I eyeballed it.\u00c2\u00a0 Mine probably range from 4 -6 inches.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s okay.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ll call that &#8220;<em>adding visual interest<\/em>&#8221; instead of being sloppy, ok?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-4.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-42.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4209\" time to create loops with the ribbon, leaving a little room (approx 1\/4&#8243;) at the bottom, beneath the &#8220;seam.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 You can either sew these, as Jen from <a href=\"http:\/\/tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com\/\">Tatertots and Jello<\/a> did, or if you don&#8217;t have a sewing machine, you can hot glue them like I did.\u00c2\u00a0 I worked with 3 to 4 strips of ribbon at a time&#8230;that&#8217;s how fast I could glue then fold them down before the hot glue dried.\u00c2\u00a0 I just threw all of my loops in a big box as I went.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4210\" got enough?\u00c2\u00a0 You probably don&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 Make MORE!<\/p>\n<p>Time to start gluing your ribbon loops to the wreath form.\u00c2\u00a0 I worked on the front\/top of the wreath first.\u00c2\u00a0 You need to separate the part of the ribbon below the &#8220;seam&#8221; you created.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s what you&#8217;ll be gluing down.\u00c2\u00a0 See what I mean in this not-so-great-photo below?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4211\" title=\"Halloween Ribbon Wreath 6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" more loops to your wreath, placing them at random angles.\u00c2\u00a0 Shove them together as close as you can so your wreath will look nice and full.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have the top of the wreath filled in, it&#8217;s time to work on the sides!\u00c2\u00a0 I was struggling with my method for the sides until The Picky Apple stepped in with his genius suggestion to layer the ribbons on the side, so the top of the loops are all still facing the front of the wreath (instead of poking off to the sides&#8230;).\u00c2\u00a0 Either way could work, but this is what I did.\u00c2\u00a0 See how they are all facing up toward the top of the wreath?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4220\" title=\"Halloween Ribbon Wreath 10\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" What a beautiful ribbon wreath!\u00c2\u00a0 You could totally stop here.\u00c2\u00a0 (And I&#8217;ll admit that if I hadn&#8217;t already purchased my letters, I might have.)<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s add some pizazz!\u00c2\u00a0 Jen from <a href=\"http:\/\/tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com\/\">Tatertots and Jello<\/a> added a glittery &#8220;31&#8221; to hers, and I opted to add &#8220;BOO&#8221; to mine.\u00c2\u00a0 I have not yet mastered the art of applying glitter to things.\u00c2\u00a0 For my first coat, I used Mod Podge (which I pronounce and read as <em>Modge<\/em> Podge).\u00c2\u00a0 Once that dried, I wanted MORE glitter, so I added a coat of spray adhesive and more glitter.\u00c2\u00a0 Spray adhesive is wonderful, and did the trick.\u00c2\u00a0 But don&#8217;t get it on your hands&#8230;.it doesn&#8217;t come off easily.\u00c2\u00a0 And if you&#8217;re playing with glitter too, then you&#8217;ll wind up like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4214\" title=\"Halloween Ribbon Wreath 7\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" hands, not The Littlest Apple&#8217;s.\u00c2\u00a0 Remember how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/13\/100-things-about-me\/\">I said I had small hands?<\/a>)\u00c2\u00a0 Now, how to get those letters stuck on the wreath?\u00c2\u00a0 Jen from <a href=\"http:\/\/tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com\/\">Tatertots and Jello<\/a> used some large wooden beads.\u00c2\u00a0 I bought some, but mine weren&#8217;t quite big enough.\u00c2\u00a0 Since I was getting antsy to just be finished, I got creative and shopped the house for a solution.<\/p>\n<p>I covered some of The Littlest Apple&#8217;s blocks in ribbon, like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4216\" title=\"Halloween Ribbon Wreath 8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" the blocks to the wreath, then glued the glittery letters to the blocks.\u00c2\u00a0 I was going for an off-centered look, but that &#8220;O&#8221; on the right looks like he&#8217;s saying &#8220;Help!\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m falling off the wreath!&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s not.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s glued on very securely.\u00c2\u00a0 Just a little crooked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Halloween-Ribbon-Wreath-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4217\" wreath!\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m already thinking about making another ribbon wreath for Christmas or Easter (or both!).\u00c2\u00a0 The possibilities and color combos for this type of wreath are
