{"id":3154,"date":"2010-05-24T21:41:05","date_gmt":"2010-05-25T03:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/?p=3154"},"modified":"2010-05-24T21:41:05","modified_gmt":"2010-05-25T03:41:05","slug":"good-reads-food-rules-an-eaters-manual-by-michael-pollan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/24\/good-reads-food-rules-an-eaters-manual-by-michael-pollan\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Reads: Food Rules: An Eater&#8217;s Manual, by Michael Pollan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/014311638X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=014311638X\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3155\" title=\"Food Rules\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Food-Rules.jpg\" alt=\"Food Rules\" width=\"99\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are quite a few good books about Real\/Whole\/Traditional Foods out there:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the aptly titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001P3OM7S?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001P3OM7S\">Real Food: What to Eat and Why<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002N2XII4?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002N2XII4\">What to Eat<\/a> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/20\/good-reads-what-to-eat-by-marion-nestle\/\">my review here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0967089735?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0967089735\">Nourishing Traditions<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0060852569?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0060852569\">Animal, Vegetable, Miracle<\/a> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/02\/good-reads-animal-vegetable-miracle-by-barbara-kingsolver\/\">my review here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Michael Pollan&#8217;s other book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143114964?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0143114964\">In Defense of Food: An Eater&#8217;s Manifesto<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read all of those (okay, I&#8217;m still working my way through Nourishing Traditions), and as enjoyable and informative as all those were, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/014311638X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=014311638X\">Food Rules<\/a> appealed to me because of its brevity.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in the Real Foods movement, but are feeling overwhelmed and don&#8217;t know where to begin, or if you&#8217;d just like a quick overview, then Food Rules is the perfect starting place for you.<\/p>\n<p>The book consists of a short introduction and 64 Food Rules, each less than a page long.\u00c2\u00a0 These 64 rules are divided into 3 sections, which easily sum up the main philosophy of the book: (1) Eat Food, (2) Mostly Plants, (3) Not too much.\u00c2\u00a0 All of the rules, many of them repetitive in nature, expound on those 3 main rules.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my favorite rules from the book:<\/p>\n<p>#2: Don&#8217;t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn&#8217;t recognize as food.<\/p>\n<p>#6: Avoid food products that contain more than five ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>#7: Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce.<\/p>\n<p>#25: Eat your colors<\/p>\n<p>#27: Eat animals that have themselves eaten well.<\/p>\n<p>#47: Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored.<\/p>\n<p>#56: Limit your snacks to unprocessed plant foods.<\/p>\n<p>#60: Treat treats as treats.<\/p>\n<p>These concise rules make eating sound so simple.\u00c2\u00a0 When did it all get so complicated?\u00c2\u00a0 Getting back to eating simply should be, well, <em>simple<\/em>, don&#8217;t you think?\u00c2\u00a0 Easier said than done, but this book will certainly give you some guidelines on how to get started and stay on track.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disclosure: I have not been asked to review this book.\u00c2\u00a0 This was just a Good Read I wanted to share!
