{"id":2922,"date":"2010-04-21T20:17:56","date_gmt":"2010-04-22T02:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/?p=2922"},"modified":"2010-04-21T20:17:56","modified_gmt":"2010-04-22T02:17:56","slug":"spring-2010-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/21\/spring-2010-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring 2010 Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I started a small square foot garden, after reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1591862027?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1591862027\">All New Square Foot Gardening<\/a>, by Mel Bartholomew.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1591862027?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thepicapp-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1591862027\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2928\" title=\"Square Foot Gardening\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Square-Foot-Gardening.jpg\" alt=\"Square Foot Gardening\" width=\"112\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our garden is a 4 x 4 raised bed, built by The Picky Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Last year I grew (or attempted to grow) mammoth sunflowers, various herbs, tomatoes, beans, jalapenos and green bell pepper.\u00c2\u00a0 The mammoth sunflowers were impressive (7 or 8 feet tall!), and a few of the herbs did well, but I had minimal production from the other plants.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps because of all of the shade from the sunflowers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2926\" title=\"Seeds\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Seeds.jpg\" alt=\"Seeds\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Seeds.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Seeds-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I recently planted my spring garden.\u00c2\u00a0 I had lavender, rosemary, and oregano left from last year.\u00c2\u00a0 This year we added basil (grew great last year but didn&#8217;t survive the hard freeze), tomatoes, beans, mesclun, lettuce, spinach, cantaloupe, carrots, and strawberries.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m really hopeful that we&#8217;ll be able to eat at least SOME of it this year!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2927\" title=\"Spring 2010 Garden\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Spring-2010-Garden.jpg\" alt=\"Spring 2010 Garden\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Spring-2010-Garden.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Spring-2010-Garden-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I thought it would be such a great experience to plant with The Littlest Apple this year.\u00c2\u00a0 He LOVES digging, and seems very interested in seeds.\u00c2\u00a0 But he still doesn&#8217;t quite &#8220;get&#8221; it.\u00c2\u00a0 Or if he does, he&#8217;s just not that big on following directions. He DID enjoy digging lots and lots of holes.\u00c2\u00a0 But not the small holes I needed for the seeds.\u00c2\u00a0 Nor would he listen to my instructions regarding the planting of the seeds.\u00c2\u00a0 He just wanted to throw them here, there and everywhere!\u00c2\u00a0 He just wanted to keep on digging even after the seeds were in the dirt and I&#8217;m not sure if any of the seeds actually STAYED were I planted them.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ll see if anything actually grows&#8230;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"linkwithin_hook\" id=\"https:\/\/www.thepickyapple.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/21\/spring-2010-garden\/\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I started a small square foot garden, after reading All New Square Foot Gardening, by Mel Bartholomew.
